MiOhi Conventions

We are a group of Japanese culture enthusiasts, bringing our ideas to life with genuine joy and passion. Our primary aim is to organise events which are both educational and entertaining. Our visitors have ample opportunities to make themselves familiar with Japanese culture and popculture, as well as to enjoy themselves. Our conventions attract first and foremost manga and anime fans and Japanese culture lovers, but people interested in Western comics, science fiction and fantasy also attend in significant numbers.

What is a convention?

A convention is a gathering of people sharing a certain area of interest, in this case Japanese popculture (there are numerous other conventions devoted to other topics, e.g. Western fantasy). They usually last two or three days, and most take place at weekends. The meeting venues vary depending on the size of the event, there are conventions organised in exposition halls, schools, and local community centres. A convention's programme usually consists of panels, workshops, demonstrations, contests and quizzes covering a variety of topics strongly or loosely connected with Japanese popculture. The invited speakers often have a professional link to some area of Japanese culture, or are studying for a Japanese studies degree. A large part of the programme is however volunteered by the fans themselves. Convention participants are mostly young people , in their teens or early twenties, although the presence of older adults and families with younger children is not unusual.
